5 Women Pioneering The Sustainable Fashion Movement

Whilst fashion trends come and go, Clothes Doctor believes that the sustainable fashion movement is here to stay, and we aren’t the only ones. Many celebrities and fashion designers alike have pledged to protect the environment, and have committed to fair and ethical trade, one garment at a time. We take a look at 5 inspirational women who are dedicated to the sustainable fashion movement.

1) Vivienne Westwood
My clothes have a story. They have an identity. They have a character and a purpose. That’s why they become classics. Because they keep on telling a story. They are still telling it.

Vivienne advocates quality over quantity when it comes to fashion, and although she acknowledges that her clothes are expensive, she remains committed to producing long-lasting garments. One of Vivienne Westwood’s first encounters with sustainable fashion was when she worked with Richard Branson on a collection, in which eco-friendly materials were used throughout their designs.

2) Emma Watson
I want to know that it’s not leaving a negative mark…Fashion is something that touches us every single day. We get dressed every single day. I want to look good and feel good and do good, and that, to me, is luxury.

It would be impossible not to mention Emma Watson when it comes to the sustainable fashion movement. Alongside championing female empowerment, Emma has taken a stand on environmental concerns surrounding the fashion industry. She claims that she’ll work for free with any clothing brands that are dedicated to Fairtrade, organic, ethical and sustainable fashion. Emma believes in fair trade because it gives power to those in poverty whilst creating sustainable fashion.

3) Stella McCartney
Everyone can do simple things to make a difference, and every little bit does count.

Stella McCartney’s fashion has always been sustainable and taken environmental concerns into consideration. Her desire to create designs that are both sustainable and stylish stemmed from her largely negative experience with organic fabrics in the past, as she tells Vogue in an interview in 2016: “It was often scratchy and oatmeal-y. What’s the point of designing an oatmeal shirt if nobody buys it? It would go to a landfill, and that would be just as bad”

4) Olivia Wilde
Ethical clothing isn’t a fashion fantasy but an attainable reality.

In 2015, Olivia worked with H&M on their Conscious Exclusive 2015 Collection to create clothing from recycled and organic materials. Olivia firmly believes that fashion can be simultaneously stylish and eco-friendly.

5) Gwyneth Paltrow
Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in our own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.

Gwyneth Paltrow has definitely made her mark on sustainable fashion industry, collaborating with designers such as Stella McCartney and recently partnering with Amour Vert to create a line of eco-friendly shirts. Whilst the shirts are made from organic fabrics and low impact dyes, Gwyneth has also pledged to plant a tree for every shirt sold.
