your wool detergent questions answered
Wool and cashmere should always be washed with a pH-neutral, mild detergent.
Avoid heavy-duty or “bio” detergents, enzymes and bleaches, as these can weaken fibres, cause shrinkage and reduce softness over time. Our Knitwear & Delicates Detergent is specifically formulated to be gentle on natural fibres while still cleaning effectively.
There are 2 key reasons:
First, the pH-neutral formula protects delicate fibres during washing, helping to prevent stretching, felting and fibre damage.
Second, the essential oils (Himalayan Cedarwood & Orange, and Bergamot & Sandalwood) help provide a natural moth defence, reducing the risk of damage while your garments are being washed and stored.
Together, this means cleaner clothes that stay soft, strong and wearable for longer.
Yes. The detergent is suitable for both hand washing and machine washing, as long as you use a wool or delicate cycle and cool temperatures.
It’s designed to rinse cleanly, leaving no heavy residue behind.
Our knitwear & delicates formula is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
As a guide:
- Standard machine wash: around 3 capfuls (15ml)
- Hand wash: 1–2 capfuls (6–12ml)
Using the right amount helps fabrics rinse cleanly and keeps knitwear feeling soft rather than coated.
Yes, it can be used on everyday clothing such as cotton shirts, t-shirts and jeans.
However, because it’s designed for delicate fibres, we recommend using it primarily for wool, cashmere, silk and similar fabrics, and choosing our Everyday Laundry detergent for regular washes where possible.
Some garments labelled “dry clean only” can be washed carefully at home, but this depends on the fabric, construction and finish.
We recommend proceeding with caution and reading our expert guide before washing these items. When in doubt, spot testing and gentle hand washing are safest.
