The Smoking Jacket | Clothes Doctor Makes A Smoking Jacket

A STYLISH GARMENT FOR SMOKERS AND NON SMOKERS
The smoking jacket has always been synonymous with a gentleman’s comfort at home, a traditional coat reserved for evening wear in the comforts of your estate.
Over the past decades, the jacket changed the course of men’s style and what was once reserved exclusively for home has now become a style staple of black tie and evening wear for a night in town.
Have a read on how we turned a simple velvet jacket into a smoking jacket.

THE MAKINGS OF A SMOKING JACKET

Smoking jackets, as the name would suggest, is a jacket worn when smoking. The thick velvet absorbs the smoke and protects the dinner jacket and other garments underneath from ash. It first come into fashion in the 17th century as tobacco come into popular use and peaked in the 1950s. The jackets are not part of life like they once were, but now men are wearing them on a night out or as a dinner jacket. It is a bold, grand fashion statement.

HOW TO SPOT A SMOKING JACKET

There are many styles of jackets that are today often called smoking jackets. However, the classic smoking jacket is simply a mid-thigh length jacket that’s made of velvet with a quilted satin shawl collar, turn up cuffs and a tie belt made from velvet that’s often ornamented with tassels at the ends. Most smoking jackets have three pockets on the outside and usually a pocket reserved for a cigar. It is almost always ventless in the back and similar to a dressing gown.
A modern take on the smoking jacket includes a shawl collar that isn’t quilted and is made from satin, silk, velvet or another material. It may include braided piping on the cuffs and/or the collar. The jacket may be made from silk or other material instead of velvet. Often the modernised jacket will come with buttons and not just a belt.
