SUITED AND BOOTED: THE RED CARPET TREND YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO LIVE WITHOUT

Each year we eagerly await the Oscars – not only is it a celebration of the very best talent in the film industry, but an opportunity for us to watch Hollywood’s A-Listers as they showcase their most glamorous outfits on the red carpet. Over the years, many women attending the event have favoured the designer gown as their outfit of choice, but it was refreshing to see the emergence of an entirely different red carpet trend this year: the suit.

Typically reserved for the menswear department, perhaps with the exception of female office-wear, the suit was instead bossed by a handful of powerful women on the red carpet. With each of the female stars putting their own twist on the classic suit – from unique designs and timeless two pieces to bold colour choices – they demonstrated that the suit is versatile and fit for all occasions. And the great news is that with perfect tailoring, the suit can flatter any body type and can easily be personalised (and not to mention it’s super comfortable!)

Perfect for that wardrobe transition from winter to summer, show you mean business any day of the week with the suit. We take a look at our ‘best dressed’ from the Oscars 2019:

The Caped Jumpsuit

Melissa McCarthy certainly made a statement with her red carpet look this year, opting for a black and white smart jumpsuit, with the emphasis of this outfit on the suit. The look was finished flawlessly with an elegant floor-length cape – Melissa was our hero of the night, looking like a real life superwoman!

Our tip

The fitted high waisted trouser element of the suit pull this outfit together, and are flattering on every figure thanks to the waistband and floor length style which elongate the legs. This look can be achieved by wearing a blouse or shirt tucked into long trousers. Ensure your trousers are fitted at the waist, or you could even consider adding an elastic waistband to add comfort and style. Pair with a long shawl draped over the shoulders to complete the look.

Keeping It Classic

Effortlessly chic would be the best words to describe Amy Poehler’s outfit. It was perhaps the most similar to the classic ‘masculine’ suit that was worn on the red carpet (the jacket even had tails!), although the devil was in the detail with this all-black two piece. The angular jacket and trousers were subtly contrasted with the ruffled shirt to give the suit an elegant and feminine edge.

Our tip

The neat jacket and trousers are the centrepiece of this outfit, hence tailoring around the shoulders, front, and arms is essential. All you need is a plain black suit, and you easily can make it your own – from completely reworking the shape of the jacket, to adding turn-ups to the sleeves or a decorative breast pocket – the possibilities are truly endless with modernising this classic suit.

The Party Suit

Awkwafina’s fun designer suit was perhaps the most eye-catching of the night. Any preconception that the suit is somehow ‘boring’ were blown away with this glittery power suit. Paired with a matching ruffled neck tie and clutch bag, this suit can be dressed up according to the occasion and your taste.

Our tip

Completely reinvent yourself with this daring suit. It’s all about the perfect fit, so remember that small alterations to sleeve length or trouser width and length can go a long way. This style of suit can be rocked in any fabric colour or print, so be as daring as you wish. Lastly, consider the trouser length If you plan on wearing this suit with heels!
